Connie’s Ric Rac turns 10 years old this year. And, in true South Philly fashion, we’re throwing a block party. Or three.
South Philadelphia – The community driven, artist focused venue in the heart of the Italian Market features live music six nights a week. Over the past decade, it has become a staple of the Philly music scene hosting prominent bands such as Johnny Showcase & The Mystic Ticket,Cold Roses, Lovers League, The Wallace Brothers and The Late Saints, as well as many regional touring acts. Opening in 2006 as a BYOB performance art space, it has grown to become one of the higher profile music venues in Philadelphia with an eclectic mix of events and a commitment to the local scene.
“There is a very certain and distinct genuineness to Connie’s Ric Rac that I feel falls right in line with our city of Philadelphia and the vibrant music scene that lives here. Having played the stage many times and planning on continuing to do so, I can truly say that this venue has had a lot of blood, sweat, and tears poured into it from many within the Philly music family.”
Jace Garrett, Alright Junior and Bonfire Shows
In addition to one of the biggest annual outdoor events in the Philadelphia region, The 9th Street Italian Market Festival, Connie’s Ric Rac will host two other large scale outdoor events this summer. There will also be a number of “10 Year”-branded music showcases throughout the year.
Furthermore, long-standing plans for a kitchen in the adjacent building are finally coming to fruition with a grand opening scheduled for early this summer.
Here’s the lineup of events:
Celebration Launch Party
The party gets started this Friday with Gashouse Radio! The lineup will feature Those People, Sonny Knockout, Weekend Warriors and Canadian rockers Cardboard Crowns. Be there for a special announcement from Gashouse Radio & Milk Street Marketing concerning the Philly Music Scene.
Italian Market Festival,
As always, Connie’s Ric Rac provides the local original music stage for the S. 9th Street Italian Market Festival. The streets are closed off for shops, eateries and vendors to set up outside for thousands of visitors. The Joseph F. Tartaglia Local Music Flavor Stage at 9th and Ellsworth runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., while the Gashouse Radio stage inside Connie’s goes until midnight both days.
Lickety Split Reunion
Just as this is the 10 year anniversary of The Ric Rac, it also commemorates the birth of a community that is still alive and burgeoning in Philadelphia. Many prominent artists in the local Philly scene such as Katie Barbato, Dani Mari, and Rev. TJ McGlinchey helped to build a scene at Lickety Split, located at 4th & South Streets, including the founders and owners of Connie’s (as members of The Discount Heroes).
10 Year Anniversary Concert
In what will be their biggest event ever, a large scale outdoor concert outside Connie’s will take place on the 1100 block of S. 9th Street. It will feature many of the artists who have performed there over the years, including many special guests. Lineup and vendors will be announced late May.
Country Music Fest
The Wallace Brothers, a prominent South Philly-based country/folk/rock act will host another all-day indoor/outdoor concert featuring local country roots-based musicians and bands. Full lineup and vendor will be announced mid-June.
